As I stepped into the bustling world of executive leadership 30 years ago, I quickly realized that success in this realm demands more than just sharp decision-making skills and a robust vision. It requires a deep understanding of ourselves—strengths, weaknesses, and everything else. Taking personal inventory became my indispensable tool for navigating the corporate landscape as a leader.
In the boardroom, numbers reign supreme. Yet, the most crucial figures often lie within ourselves. I've discovered that taking personal inventory involves quantifying both tangible and intangible aspects for ourselves. From productivity metrics and project success rates to softer skills like communication effectiveness and emotional intelligence, the numbers paint a vivid picture of who we are as leaders.
But statistics alone can't encapsulate the entirety of our leadership potential. Personal inventory unveils the motivations driving our actions, the values shaping our decisions, and the aspirations propelling us forward. It's a journey of self-discovery that goes beyond the confines of spreadsheets and reports.
Why is personal inventory imperative for executives and leaders?
Beyond enhancing self-awareness, it acts as a compass, guiding us toward areas ripe for growth and improvement. It unveils blind spots lurking in the shadows, waiting to derail our best-laid plans. In the fast-paced realm of executive leadership, recognizing these blind spots can mean the difference between triumph and turmoil.
The answer: find a trusted individual, friend, colleague or coach who can help you make a list for your personal inventory. Executive coaching especially offers a guiding hand in this voyage of self-discovery. Through tailored strategies and probing questions, coaches help uncover blind spots we may have overlooked. They provide a safe space for reflection and offer actionable insights to propel us towards our full potential.
As I reflect on my journey, I'm reminded of the words of renowned management guru, Peter Drucker: "What gets measured gets managed." In the world of executive leadership, personal inventory isn't just a measure; it's a roadmap to success.
So, fellow leaders, I pose this question to you: Have you taken stock of your personal inventory lately?
It would mean the world if you jotted down a word or two on how this article landed for you. -bryan
