Humans AND machines
The alternative: human vs. machines.
As a human, I'm always looking for ways to be more efficient, productive, and successful. But what if technology could help me do that? What if I could use artificial intelligence (AI) to augment my own abilities?
In 2014, I wrote the book "Human-to-Human" to emphasize the importance of meaningful connections between people in an ever-changing technology-driven world. In an age where technology is advancing rapidly, it is more important than ever to lean into our humanity and not let AI and ChatGPT replace our need for genuine human interaction.
In my book, I discussed how meaningful relationships with friends or family members are essential for a fulfilling life. With the rise of AI and ChatGPT, it can be easy to forget that human connections are still necessary and valuable. We must strive to balance embracing new technologies and maintaining our humanity by connecting with others on a deeper level.
We can use AI and ChatGPT as helpful tools to supplement our existing relationships, but we should never let them replace genuine human connection.
This is the premise of Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), a powerful AI language model developed by OpenAI. GPT was designed to generate natural language responses to prompts given to it.
The model has been trained on an immense amount of text from the internet, so it can understand complex concepts and generate human-like responses.
It is unlikely that AI and ChatGPT will ever take over the world or replace humans. AI and ChatGPT are potent tools, but they are still limited in their capabilities.
That said, while AI and ChatGPT can be used to generate content quickly, there is a risk of creating fake or inaccurate information. As AI technology continues to improve, this risk will only increase - we need to be aware of these pitfalls when using these technologies.
Look for the brands like Levi’s, which replaced all their human models with AI models. I know we can debate the usage of humans vs. machines here. The difference isn’t that they are using technology; their transparency makes this work. That said, we are going to see less and less transparency. The brands that declare their AI usage will gain more respect than those that don’t. We can’t stop AI, but we can be more human.
Additionally, humans should always double-check any generated content before sharing it. By understanding the limitations of AI and ChatGPT technology, we can ensure everyone has access to accurate information. I’ll save this for another time; there is more to write here.
The bottom line, AI cannot think for themselves or make decisions based on emotion, which only humans can do. Instead, AI and ChatGPT will continue to be used as practical tools to augment human intelligence by providing insights from data analysis or responding to questions in natural language. In this way, AI and ChatGPT can help us become more efficient and productive without taking away our jobs.
GPT's capabilities are remarkable; it can write stories, summarize passages, respond to questions, and even write code in various programming languages!
And yet GPT still falls short compared with humans regarding reasoning and perceiving the world around us.
This is why being human is still our competitive advantage; we have access to AI and our own experiences and emotions that no machine can replicate or match.
What does this mean for us as humans? It means we should strive for a symbiotic relationship between humans and technology. To succeed in this ever-changing world, we must learn how best to leverage our capabilities together for us all—humans included.
GPT has undoubtedly made a mark on the AI landscape with its impressive capabilities; however, standing out in the most human way will retain our competitive edge if we continue learning to utilize both machines and ourselves.
Action: Take a moment to make a human difference in someone else’s life today to be more human instead of heading straight for your technology or device. Show someone you care by bringing them flowers, a cup of coffee, or another small gesture - this is being human.
That’s it for today! One of the big reasons I write is to interact with you. Comment below with a word or two on how this landed for you; I’d love to engage with you ‘Human-to-Human.’ -bryan
