Get to
How a simple shift in language will change your life.
How often have we told ourselves that we “should do” something?
The phrase is usually associated with a task or activity we’d rather not do now. However, what if we changed our perspective?
What if, instead of saying we “should do” something, we say we “get to” do something? This simple switch in language can help us reframe our daily tasks as opportunities to be grateful for, rather than as obligations.
Working away at "should do" tasks drain energy. Tackling "get to" tasks is energizing and inspiring. The 'shoulds' will never bring the results you truly want in your life.
Let’s Reframe…
When we say, “I get to go for a walk,” we acknowledge that we can move our bodies and the time to do so.
Similarly, “I get to make dinner tonight” reminds us that we have access to nourishing food and the means to prepare it.
This little shift makes a substantial difference in our day-to-day lives.
So, next time we catch ourselves using “should,” take a moment to pause and ask if we could reframe the situation.
Instead of saying, “I should do my laundry,” try on, “I get to fold my clothes because fresh new clothes bring more joy to how I show up in my day.”
Learning to reframe a small shift in our language helps us balance our sense of obligation with gratitude, bringing us closer to peace and fulfillment.
I’m so grateful that I get to write to you, my friend! One reason I am writing is to engage with you. I’d love it if you would write a brief thought or jot down a word or two on how this landed for you. Keep it simple. -bryan
