Building mental calluses
Why, how, and where it's necessary.
Just like physical calluses protect our skin from friction and abrasions, mental calluses protect us from the challenges and stresses of life. Developing mental toughness and resilience can help us weather difficult situations, bounce back from setbacks, and thrive in adversity.
Why is building mental calluses necessary?
Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and we never know what obstacles we might encounter.
By developing mental calluses, we can equip ourselves to handle challenges with grace and fortitude.
Strength is not found in the absence of struggle but in the ability to face it with resilience, composure, and grace.
The path to true mental fortitude requires a steadfast commitment to self-awareness, a willingness to embrace discomfort and adversity as opportunities for growth, and a deep understanding that the strength we seek is not found in the absence of struggle but rather in our ability to face it with equanimity, resilience, and grace.
But how do we build mental calluses?
It starts with intentionally putting ourselves in uncomfortable situations and pushing ourselves outside our comfort zones.
This can be as simple as taking on a new challenge or trying something that scares us, or as complex as navigating a major life change like a job loss or a difficult relationship.
First, we have to direct our focus inward toward the development of the self.
Self-improvement.
Self-care
Self-esteem
Self-reflection
Self-awareness
Self-ishness (yes, it’s ok to be selfish)
Where is building mental calluses necessary?
Everywhere!
Whether at work, in our personal lives, or in our own inner struggles and challenges, developing mental toughness and resilience can help us succeed and thrive in all areas of life.
True mental fortitude is born from deliberately subjecting ourselves to discomfort, actively seeking growth and knowledge, and nurturing resilience as a state of being, allowing us to draw upon it as a reliable source of emotional strength when we need it most.
Today’s Action: Today, take a small micro action by intentionally doing something that makes you uncomfortable, whether it's having a difficult conversation or stepping out of your comfort zone in some way, to begin building your mental calluses and cultivate resilience in the face of life's challenges.
That’s it for today, my friend! One very big reason I write is to interact with you. Please jot a small thought or perhaps a word or two on how this landed for you; I’d love to hear from you. -bryan
